Finding Second Shooter Gigs

Hey there, aspiring wedding photographer! Are you looking to break into the world of wedding photography as a second shooter, but don’t know where to find gigs? Well you’re in the right place! Finding second shooter gigs doesn’t have to be hard. Lead photographers are always looking for great second shooters, plus this is a fantastic way to gain experience, build your portfolio, and establish yourself in the wedding industry. Here are three tried-and-true methods to help you find those coveted second shooter jobs…

Joining Facebook Photographer Groups

Facebook groups are a goldmine for connecting with local photographers and finding second shooter opportunities. Join groups dedicated to photography in your area and keep an eye out for posts from those looking for assistance. Be proactive and introduce yourself, showcase your work, and let them know you’re available and eager to learn. Networking in these groups can lead to valuable connections and future gigs. I recommend checking these groups at least two to three times a day, as opportunities can arise and be filled quickly. Being prompt and responsive can greatly increase your chances of securing jobs.

Research and Reach Out To Wedding Photographers

Take the time to research local photographers whose work you admire. Follow them on social media, engage with their posts, and get a sense of their style and approach. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with their work, reach out via email or direct message. Express your admiration for their portfolio and inquire about potential second shooter opportunities. Offer to assist any way you can, whether it’s as a third shooter, carrying bags, or helping with social media content. Showing your willingness to learn and contribute can open doors to valuable learning experiences and future collaborations. Remember, photographers often appreciate an extra set of hands, especially for behind-the-scenes content, that they can’t capture quickly on their own at weddings.  So don’t be afraid to offer your help!

Join Photography Groups

Joining local groups, such as your local Rising Tides chapter, BNI groups, and the Chamber of Commerce is another promising option. These groups can be a great way to meet other photographers and industry professionals. They also often host events, workshops, and styled shoots where you can network, learn new skills, and showcase your talent. By getting involved in these communities, you’ll not only expand your professional network but also increase your chances of finding second shooter and even lead photographer gigs.

Remember, persistence and professionalism are key when seeking second shooter opportunities. Keep honing your craft, building your portfolio, and seizing opportunities to learn and grow.
